Earthquake strikes Petrolia California

A magnitude of 6.0 earthquake hit Petrolia California, Thursday noon at about 12:20pm on February 4, 2010. Although the magnitude was revised to 5.9, the residents within the area were all terrified because of the recent Haiti earthquake. As of now there were no reports about any damage or injuries but according to some residents the earthquake cause falling of things from the shelves and minor shaking on the ground. Compare to the earthquake that happened last January 9 of this year it was just a minor quake. The earthquake that strikes them last January 9 causes severe damage on their property and even forced them to reconstruct their houses.

The earthquake lasted for about 30 seconds that was felt within 56km and has a depth of 7 miles. The exact location of the earthquake can be track at the west-northwest part of Petrolia California, which is the town of Eureka. According to the local police, the quake did not result for a tsunami warning that could cause a lot of damage to the residents. The residents from Humboldt County also experience a slight shaking on the ground but similar to Eureka there were no reports of injuries and property damage.

Petrolia California is situated at the southeast part of Cape Mendocino and has an estimated population of 300 to 500 people. It is describe by the Travel magazine as the one of the most beautiful place to live in California because of its peaceful surrounding and beautiful scenery.

The place has always been struck by earthquake and according to its history the strongest earthquake that Petrolica experienced was in 1992, which has a magnitude of 7.1. The earthquake resulted to a lot of damage on most of the resident’s property. It also burned the Petrolia General Store, which was soon rebuilt into a modern structure.
