Lane Kiffin Returns To USC

Jane_KiffinIt’s done. Pete Carroll was formally announced as the head coach of NFL’s Seattle Seahawks.  Where would the collegiate football giant, University of South California look for Carroll’s replacement?  Well, they did not look too far when they  announced that Lane Kiffin will be going back to USC, this time to serve as the head coach.

Before this went down though, there were rumors that the Trojans would reciprocate the “favor” done by one of NFL’s teams.  It was reported that Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio was offered a job with the USC Trojans.  That rumor was shot down easily though as Del Rio denied the report.  This denial was supported by Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver in a press conference where he announced that Del Rio will return as the Jaguars’ head coach next season.

Long-time Trojans fans would remember Lane Kiffin because he has already spent some time with the USC’s football program.  He was a member of Carroll’s staff from 2001 until 2006.  During his last year with the Trojans before this hiring, he was promoted as the offensive coordinator.  This is what earned him recognition, and finally a full time head coaching gig with the Oakland Raiders.

His time with the Raiders though did not have a happy ending after he coached the team to only five wins in two seasons.  Kiffin then left amidst a war of words with Raiders owner Al Davis.  After his stint with the Raiders, he went back to collegiate football after Tennessee’s then head coach Philip Fulmer announced that he would not be returning in 2009 as the Volunteers head coach.

Lane Kiffin, along with his father, Monte did quite a good job with Tennessee’s football program, guiding the Vols to a 7-6 record and making an appearance at the Chick-Fil-A Bowl.  His old man will come back with him to the Trojans to fill quite a huge shoe that Carroll left.  Lane Kiffin USC head coach would have to work his magic with the USC roster since Carroll lead the Trojans to a dominating 97-19 record in nine seasons.
