Tornado in Ventura, CA

21 January 2010 One Comment

Very strong winds in Ventura County has ravaged Southern California on Thursday cancelling flights, closing interstates and beaches being pounded by big waves.

An alleged tornado has also put a car airborne, dropped into a tree, torn metal roofs apart and took boats off their trailers.

The National Weather Service confirmed that the damage in Ventura was caused by the smallest possible tornado. Even this category can do serious damage, ripping off roofs and power lines.

Some witnesses reported seeing a wind funnel about 1:30 p.m. Thursday and traveled 1 1/2 miles in Ventura but there was no immediate confirmation from the National Weather Service at that time. “Radar patters indicated it may have been a non-rotating wind gust called microburst”, said Eric Boldt, a meteorologist.

No injuries were reported.
